The Kingston City Hall is considered by many to be a masterpiece of 19th century architecture in Canada.  The building was originally designed by George Browne, and at the time of its construction (1843-4), Kingston was for a brief time the capital of the country. The building is a National Historic Site (1961), and is also municipally designated under the Ontario Heritage Act, as well as being the centerpiece of the Market Square Heritage Conservation District (1985, and updated in 2013)
