62 College Street
This large stone double house was built in 1841 to plans by Andrew Drummond and occupied by Drummond and John Mowat. This handsome double limestone house was designated under the OHA by-law 87-151. Drummond came to Kingston from Edinburgh soon after the death of his uncle Robert Drummond, one the contractors of the Rideau Canal. Drummond lived in half of the building, while John Mowat occupied the other half. The first principal of Queen’s, Thomas Liddell, later occupied Mowat’s section. The house retains its original casement windows and shutters. The brick chimney was entirely rebuilt by local mason Matthew Macartney in 2024. This restoration work was awarded for heritage conservation by the Frontenac Heritage Foundation in 2024. More information can be found in our awards section.
