The Spire
In the 1840’s the Methodists hired noted architect and builder William Coverdale to raise this imposing building that looks only slightly like the current Sydenham Street United Church/The Spire. The building was awarded by the Frontenac Heritage Foundation in 1996 when it was the Sydenham Street United Church and in 2018 as the Spire. More information is provided in our awards section. ‘Friends of the Spire’ undertook a unique project to remodel parts of the building from 2017 to 2019 and make it accessible. This includes installing an elevator, improving washrooms, and making the William Street entrance accessible. The effort vastly added to its sustainability as a community asset while retaining its role for its congregation. The governance model is remarkable.
